Complications of Shoulder Dislocation
Vascular injuries including:
- axillary artery injuries
- subclavian vein thrombosis injury
Nerve injuries including:
- Brachial plexus nerve damage
- Axillary nerve nerve damage
- Suprascapular nerve damage
- Musculocutaneous nerve damage
- Radial nerve damage
- Ulnar nerve damage
- Nerve injury in shoulder dislocation occurs 21-36% of the time
Complications of Anterior Shoulder Dislocation
- There is a high recurrence after a person initially experiences an anterior shoulder dislocation
- Bankart lesion: this is a rupture of joint capsule and inferior glenohumeral ligament
- Rotator cuff injuries including tears and ruptures of the muscles
- Humeral head defects:
Complications of Posterior Shoulder Dislocation
- Nondiagnosis: some people are not initially diagnosed with a posterior shoulder dislocation
- Humeral head defects

- Bankart lesion: this is a rupture of joint capsule and inferior glenohumeral ligament
- Rotator cuff injuries including tears and ruptures of the muscles
- Humeral head defects:
- Greater tuberosity fractures
- Hill-Sach - this is a compression fracture of humeral head
- Coracoid fractures
Complications of Posterior Shoulder Dislocation
- Nondiagnosis: some people are not initially diagnosed with a posterior shoulder dislocation
- Humeral head defects
- Lesser tuberosity fractures
